On May 9, 2025, the Lorraine Bethea Hospice Foundation proudly celebrated the 103rd birthday of Beatrice F. Coleman, a distinguished World War II U.S. Army veteran, at the Hampton VA Medical Center in Hampton, Virginia. This special event honored not only her remarkable longevity but also her trailblazing military service.

In 1943, at the age of 21, Ms. Coleman enlisted in the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps, which later became the Women's Army Corps. She served as a mail clerk and company clerk until 1945, playing a crucial role in the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion—known as the "Six Triple Eight." This all-Black, all-female unit was instrumental in clearing a massive backlog of over 17 million pieces of mail in Europe, ensuring that soldiers received vital correspondence from home.

During the celebration, Ms. Coleman was surrounded by family, friends, and community members who paid tribute to her legacy. She reflected on her service, stating, "I have met people from all over the world, and it's nice meeting them, nice seeing how they live and talk and everything else, and so it's really been a joy for me." Her daughter, Cheryl E. Brown, shared that her mother's longevity is attributed to her hard work, healthy lifestyle, and positive outlook on life.

Carolyn K. Williams of the Lorraine Bethea Hospice Foundation remarked, "The special thing about Beatrice: first of all, 103, one of the first African American women to serve in the war. That's absolutely amazing."
